2024 has been a really productive year in our small school garden.
At different stages throughout the year we have had high yielding crops of potatoes, onions, radishes and sweet corn. We have also had an abundance of brightly coloured flowers throughout the seasons including daffodils, hydrangea, cosmos, sweet peas, chrysanthemums and dahlias.
2025 looks set to be another great gardening year. Our school has been selected to participate in the GROW AT SCHOOL programme run by GIY Waterford, as seen on the Food Matters, TV programme. They have provided us with, 1 tonne of good quality top soil, 4 wooden raised beds and a selection of seeds, all of which are a really welcome addition to our garden-based learning efforts.
As part of the programme, children will also have an opportunity to participate in a series of 8 online lessons focused on encouraging children to appreciate the importance of healthy food and the process involved in producing it.
Some of the children have already been busy with buckets and trowels giving our existing beds a winter mulch of compost.
